Where does your donation go?

When you give to Leucan, you are contributing to its mission—to enhance the well-being, the healing and the recovery of children with cancer and to help support their families.

Support Services

Donations collected by Leucan teams serve mainly to provide children with cancer and their families from all over Quebec with various services adapted to their needs through all stages of the illness. Leucan is active in all areas connected to family life: whether it’s the hospital, home or school, in the social life or in the public eye; through :

  • financial assistance
  • welcome, emotional assistance and support services
  • information, hosting and support services in playrooms
  • massage therapy at the hospital and in their region
  • socio-recreational activities, support groups
  • school life services
  • end-of-life and bereavement follow-up services

Support for Research

The funds collected also support clinical research in Quebec’s four pediatric oncology centres: Sainte-Justine UHC, Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre, Centre mère-enfant du CHUQ and CHUS. Leucan invests nearly one million dollars annually to cover costs associated with pediatric cancer research. Clinical research aims to provide access to the best existing treatment protocols, and thus improve children’s chances to recover.

Life After Cancer

Donations from generous donors also allow Leucan and the pediatric oncology centres to further study life after cancer amongst children, a major issue in the fight against cancer. Thanks to innovations in treating pediatric cancer, it was demonstrated that 82% of children with cancer survive*. Even if most of them will lead normal lives, these young people could sooner or later suffer from at least one long-term complication due to the treatment they received. Complications are severe in over a third of the cases, and so these patients have important needs that need to be met. Of note, in August 2007, a total of $110,000 was awarded to a program for the recovery of children treated for pediatric cancer. Accordingly, a partnership was established with the Fondation Édouard et ses étoiles to create the Fée des étoiles Support Program.

For Each Dollar

Here is the breakdown of expenses for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. More specifically, this means that for each dollar collected, $0.48 go to services to children and their families, $0.20 to promotions and development, $0.13 to research grants, $0.11 to administrative expenses, $0.06 to communications and $0.02 to the amortization of capital assets.

Thank you for making a difference for the children!
